Shortly Shifted to another regular jail either in Pune, Nashik or Nagpur
Sanjay Dutt, convicted in the 1993 Bombay blasts case, surrendered before a special TADA court in Mumbai to undergo the remaining 42 months jail term. The actor has already served 18 months in jail in connection with the case.
As soon as Dutt appeared before the court, formalities began for his surrender. The court commenced the process for the identification of Dutt, whose conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court recently.
After the surrender formalities got over, he was taken to the high-security Arthur Road Central Jail - which usually houses undertrials - in south-central Mumbai. He will also be subjected to medical tests.
Finally, he will be shifted to another regular jail either in Pune, Nashik or Nagpur. Police officials were tight-lipped about the final destination.
Clad in a white kurta pyjama, the 53-year-old Bollywood superstar was accompanied by his wife Manyata, sister Priya Dutt and friends including Mahesh Bhatt, Baba Siddiqui and Apurva Lakhia to the court.
As soon as Dutt's vehicle arrived near the court, it was surrounded by people, including press photographers.
Bhatt first emerged out of the car and with folded hands requested the media personnel to move away so that Dutt was able to reach the court. After much persuasion, the way was cleared for Dutt to reach the court.
Convicted in the 1993 serial blasts case, he will have to spend three-and-half years in jail. Sanjay had first spent 18 months in jail in 1993-95 and another 15 months in 1995-97, followed by a brief stint of seven months in 2006-07.
Security has been beefed up at the Jail as authorities had received an anonymous letter some days back alleging threat to Dutt's life. The letter said Dutt would be harmed if he was lodged in Arthur Road Jail.
